The keffiyeh, a Middle-Eastern headscarf, is worn to protect the
eyes, mouth, nose and neck from desert conditions. It is also associated with the
British military, particularly the SAS.
It has become fashionable in the west in the last couple of years, and some have objected to young Americans wearing them, claiming that the keffiyeh represents a symbol of terrorism.
For the soldier, the keffiyeh has become a valuable piece of their equipment in desert warfare. It provides protection against the sand, keeps the head area cool in the hot sun, and warm in the cold night. It can also double as a carrying pouch, make-shift bandage, or a sling amongst many other uses!
